Aluminum Hollow Tubes

Round and Square, and Telescopic Tubes, Oh My!

Aluminum tubing has endless use cases. The good folk over at IQS and aluminum-extrusions.net highlights “mining equipment, hardware joints, fluid and gas transpiration, light building frames, structural applications, lighting fixtures, and light poles” as just some of the vast applications for aluminum tubing.

At Extrude-A-Trim, store fixtures, displays, kiosks, chairs, elevators, and framing are primary uses for our clients. But you can even use aluminum tubing for aerospace/aeronautics. It’s almost as if Xtrudor turned himself into a hollow tube just to show all the different ways they can be used.

There are four primary kinds of aluminum hollow tubing – round hollow tube, rectangular hollow tube, square hollow tube, and telescopic tube. But which one should you choose for your project?

Which Tube is Right for You?

It might seem like a hollow tube is the same across the board. But the reality is, while it may be similar, some of the shapes are better for things than others (i.e., structural integrity). Plus, unless otherwise specified, telescopic tubes are the only ones designed to fit together and inside each other.

Round Hollow Tube

While all our aluminum tubing has good structural capabilities, round aluminum tubing has a higher resistance to flex and twisting while still maintaining the same weight as our other hollow tubing extrusions. Round tubing is great for framework in commercial applications. But it is also sleek enough (with our choice of mill, anodized, and brite clear finishes) for highly cosmetic uses.

Square and Rectangular Hollow Tube

Square and rectangular hollow tubes are perfect for lightweight industrial frameworks and bracketry. Square tubes are also sometimes used for motorsport chassis but are more commonly used as downspouts and for building supplies.

Telescopic Tube

Telescopic tubes fit inside each other and extend as you need it to. Simple enough – but you need special tubes to make it work. Just buying a standard round, square, or rectangular tube is unlikely to give you the result you’re looking for.

Some standard uses for telescopic tubes are flag poles, adjustable racks, shower curtain poles, and camera booms, just to name a few.

At Extrude-A-Trim, we guarantee any sequential combination of our Telescopic Tubes will marry together whether you need two, three, or four tubes for your application.

Architectural or Structural

You know aluminum is strong and versatile, which makes it perfect for structural and architectural purposes. As mentioned above, round aluminum tubing provides greater strength and resistance from twisting and flexing. But Xtrudor has worked his magic again and created structural square hollow tubes with rounded corners. These rounded corners provide extra strength and are primed for structural use – a perfect marriage of the extra strength you want with the design you need or prefer.

Something Not Quite Fitting?

As always, no matter your use, we can provide custom hollow tubes at your request. Whether you’re looking for a custom length, dimension, or finish, we are here to help you with all your aluminum tubing needs. So, contact us today if you need custom aluminum tubing.
