Everything you need to know about Aluminum Channels

Whether it’s for framing, protection, or decoration aluminum channels come in a wide range of shapes – perfect for strength or design. Their strength and corrosion resistance provides use for structural purposes, the ability to fit aesthetic preferences provides aluminum channels with their versatility.

Part of that versatility comes in the different kinds of aluminum channels. There are C Channels, F Channels, I-Beams, J Channels, U Channels, Z Channels, and right angle channels (a.k.a. aluminum angles).

So, with so many options, what do you do with all the different types of aluminum channels.

What are your options?

While here at Extrude-A-Trim, we can customize any extrusion you want, our primary in-stock channels consist of angle channels, C Channels, F Channels, J Channels, and U Channels. (Sorry I-Beams and Z Channels). Let’s do a quick rundown of our primary in-stock channels.

Right Angle Channels

Let’s be honest. This is an angle. Some people like to get technical and call it an angle channel or a partial channel. And while the technicality is true, we prefer to keep it simple – it’s an aluminum angle.

We’ve already dived deep into the versatility of aluminum angles, but the quickest rundown is their multifaceted use-cases for structural integrity and architectural flair. Whether they’re used for straight edges of tables or countertops or for construction because of its extra strength and corrosion resistance, the aluminum angle is one the go-to extrusions regardless of industry.

C Channels

The combination of strength and beauty make C Channels a perfect extrusion. Our friends over at IQS summarized C Channels wonderfully noted that C Channels are used to “protect edges in millwork, complement wood panels, serve as store fixtures, or function as framing elements. They are also frequently used for their aesthetic value, adding a sophisticated touch to projects.”

So, whether you’re looking for a decorative architectural channel (to perfect your design) or a structural channel (because of its super strength), Extrude-A-Trim has you covered (in numerous different finishes).

F Channels

F Channels have two main purposes – aluminum sign frame extrusions or as corner moulding.

Suitable for interior and exterior signage, signage mounting, and displays, our aluminum EX sign frame extrusions are used to make aluminum sign boxes or frames for a sign box.

Choose between inside corner or outside corner mouldings to provide you the seamless look you and other cabinet makers and builders require.

J Channels

The J Channel’s (which also goes by J-Cap, J Edge Trim, J Moulding or Mirror J Cap) primary function is for aesthetics. You can use it to frame a mirror, manufacture store fixtures, and mount sidings on corners.

In addition to the J Channel’s aesthetic aptitude, it helps protect mirror and glass panels – and it helps protect wood as well for any concerned architectural millworkers.

U Channels

How are these different than C Channels you ask? Well, they aren’t that different. However, the rounded outside edges of our architectural U Channels enable an elegant detail when used in frameless glass shower enclosures.

But really, the only major difference is which way you hold the aluminum channel.

Is that it?

What else do you need to know about aluminum channels? Not a ton – except for the types of finishes you can get. Here are the types of in-stock finishes we have for some of our channels.
